Heads Up: Next week I will be at a silent retreat so there will either be no Weekly Update or a modified version of it. And due to just sheer overwhelm, I will only be making videos when I have the space / inspiration to do so, and this week is unfortunately not one of those weeks.
Hello Friends & Subscribers
& Welcome to a New Week <3
Something about this moment in time, for me, feel simultaneously liminal and concrete. The way one comes up from the water for air and the disorientating experience in the gasping return. Perhaps this is because I spend so much time in the realm of my own thoughts and the thoughts of others in my studies, and when I come up for air I find not only the beautiful wet landscape and plump moss of late Portland winter, but also the intuitive sensing of that monstrous force creeping in through the shadows, snatching people out of sight, and whispering lullabies to convince us that nothing is happening. Life these days in the US feels a lot like living inside Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None. For those targeted, the horror has already arrived, or is arriving, and in that experience reality as it once was is suspended. We are living in an existential crisis that confrontation with the rupture of one’s sense of safety and regularity induces. One loses trust in that which has, up until this point, remained consistent and regular and instead one lives in a heightened state of vigilance that I imagine is worsened by being enveloped in a larger context of business as usual. The rug is being pulled out from under all of us - the question is how close are you to the source of the pulling.
Astrologically, we occupy a liminal space as we are nestled between the end of the Mars Retrograde and the start of the Venus Retrograde while Mercury enters their pre-retrograde shadow. This week, we are invited to consciously occupy the in between spaces, that are perhaps not quite so in-between as they seem because in one way or another we are always in a state of transition - and there in lies the discomfort, for daily functionality requires some experience of stability. These days that feels harder to access, which astrologically is reflected in the major shifts happening this year.
In this very moment, we are in just one of the many great transitions in 2025 and March is a likely candidate as one of the most active months of the year. The beginning of the month sees Venus and Mercury station retrograde. Mid-March sees the first eclipse season of the year across the Virgo/Pisces axis, and the end of the month ushers Neptune into Aries.
[Brief (reader optional) Tangent/]
Before looking specifically at the transits this week, I want to acknowledge the question I ask myself more often these days which is what is the point of this? That is to say, Astrology. I have noticed a resistance rising within my body and mind as I have been writing these weekly updates recently that questions the legitimacy and usefulness of spending precious time tracking the subtle movements of the planets. The project of tracking the planets and their personal impact feels particularly solipsistic at this moment in history. My Mars in Aries calls me to action - to be helpful or useful in some way. I could not, with good conscious, write this weekly update without acknowledging in some capacity what is happening in our world. I do not wish to perpetuate the temptation towards turning a blind eye [while simultaneously acknowledging the necessity of doing so on occasion - of coming up for air & of finding our ground]. It is a difficult balancing act to perform, and despite what so many would insist upon, there is no prescriptive amount one must be engaging in one way of being or another.
My deep doubt in the work I am doing was addressed in a recent post made by Amaya Rourke, who helpfully pointed out that many are feeling doubt. She says, “And then it spread to friends and peers. Healers doubting their gifts. Teachers wondering if they had anything left to offer. Creators wondering if it’s appropriate to make their work right now, because *waves arms in the air* of all the things.”
Boy do I feel this.
And yet here I am. Speaking once again to the movement of the planets and offering the simple invitation to check in, and I think it is because, when the rug gets swept out from under you and you’ve lost your balance and fallen back to the floor, the one perspective you still have access to is up. There is something about just looking up at the sky, literally as well as metaphorically in these updates, that reminds me of the simple yet powerful techniques that are used to help people ground while caught in a traumatic flashback such as the five senses technique. “What are five things you can see? Four things you can touch?” etc. Tracking the transits gives my life a simultaneous stability of knowing what’s happening at a particular time and it enlarges my capacity to be comfortable with liminality because everything is constantly moving. And, as we are grounding into our own stories, it is essential to realize that our own psychology can NEVER be divorced from the collective experience. I do actually think this is something that a personal approach to astrology can benefit: the realization in relationship to recognize that the same forces are impacting all of us in unique, yet archetypally patterned, way. Astrology not only invites us into our own story, but into the story of others. Astrology brings us back again and again to the recognition of an animate, interdependent cosmos.
So on that note…
[/Tangent Over]
This week is an eventful week, with Mercury continuing to take the spotlight for the most aspects as they speed through Pisces. First, Mercury conjoins Saturn on Tuesday then sextiles Uranus on Thursday. On Friday, Mercury enters their pre-retrograde shadow at 26° Pisces where they will return on April 7th. Then, Mercury promptly conjoins the North Node then Neptune, preparing to ingress into Aries at the beginning of next week. Speaking of liminal, Mercury, I would argue, is moving through the most liminal space in the chart right now - the strange landscape between Saturn and Neptune where the North Node currently resides. Saturn is the planet of boundaries, of concrete reality, space and time, of limitations and restrictions, judgement and consequences, and of maturational processes. Meanwhile Neptune is a planet of boundlessness, diffusion, undifferentiation, pourousness, and spiritual transcendent processes. Where Saturn closes down, Neptune opens up. These two planets have an oppositional agenda, and thus the space between them is a transitionary space where things that once felt restricted become unrestricted, things that once felt boundaried become boundless. Things felt felt worldly become otherworldly. The terror within the psychic landscape of Pisces, one of flashing archetypal images and nonsensical storylines, transitions from what is actually happening to all possible happenings. And then, in the center, the N. Node, not so much a planet but simply a point in the sky, the eclipse point, a point of increasing and intensifying and immense hunger - that Mercury will feel ravenous, having just been struck with a sextile from earth-shaking, electrifying Uranus, and during that process will cross the liminal space into the pre-retrograde shadow.
For those of you who have Mercury as a time lord or as an ascendant lord, pay particular attention to this strange journey Mercury goes on this week, and for all of us, we may listen for the early signs of a Mercury Retrograde story which tends to include the start of something that perhaps must face delay. As always, look to the themes of the houses that Mercury will be retrograding through as well as the houses that Mercury rules in your chart and that Mercury occupies to piece together the narrative as it unfolds. This Mercury Retrograde will be intimately tied with the Venus Retrograde, but it may also harken us back to the Mercury Retrograde through Sagittarius that occurred last year just as Mars stationed retrograde as well the last time Mercury went Retrograde through Aries April 1st - April 25th 2024. Utilizing Gary Canton’s lens of Mercury Retrograde cycles through the triplicity (the elements), this particular Mercury Retrograde is one of the transitional retrogrades from the fire triplicity into the water triplicity, however, we have another year until Mercury shifts completely into water. Another example of liminality.
In addition to Mercury’s movements, Venus stations retrograde at 10° Aries on Saturday March 1st. Perhaps you too have already seen signs of the burgeoning Venus Retrograde - stories of love and creativity that require us to return or to stand still. Just as you will with Mercury, look to the Aries and Pisces houses in your chart as well as the houses Venus rules and Venus occupies. And simply pay attention to life as it unfolds.
Finally, the Sun in Pisces squares Jupiter in Gemini on Sunday while Mercury is conjoining Neptune, shining a light on Jupiter in the Gemini house of your chart. The energy of this transit feels like a recapitulation of last week’s Mercury square Jupiter, which as predicted was particularly beneficial for creative writing and communication. If you are experiencing any transits involving Jupiter, expect that story to be activated at the end of this week by the Sun’s spotlight.

Lagniappe: [Lan-yap]: A word that describes “a little extra”
A new section of the weekly update sharing artifacts from my previous week and sometimes more personal reflections on art and astrology
“Frankie, you ain’t got nothing on your mind but your hair.”
This fantastic witticism comes from the movie Nothing but a Man which I watched this past week. I wish I had more time to go into my thoughts and feelings, but instead I will simply offer you the same journey that I went on after watching this film that speaks so beautifully to the realities of life for the black community in Alabama in the 60s, the way oppressive power dynamics affects psychology and relationships, multigenerational trauma [what Dr. Degruy refers to as Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome], and the consequences of resistance.
Nothing But a Man stars the jazz vocalist, poet, and actress Abbey Lincoln
